The independent, non-profit National Institute of Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972 to test and certify automotive repair and service professionals. Automotive technicians can take one or more of ASE's standardized exams. If the technician passes the exam, which stresses knowledge of job-related skills and can show that he or she has two years of relevant experience in that specialty, ASE certifies the tech. The test must be retaken and passed every five years in order to renew the certification.

ASE Master Certified technicians have taken and passed the tests in all eight categories set by the ASE national institute.
